in a bookshop near Corbridge, whilst walking Hadrian's Wall some time ago now, and have
determined to purchase my own copy ever since.
Eventually I purchased the hardcover edition and find it a boon when trying to remember which
God was which, what the particular God presided over and several of their Godly and often
Ungodly attributes.
Lesley and Roy Adkins, a husband and wife team of prominent field archaeologists, have produced
a quality compilation in this book of 288 pages. The dictionary covers Celtic Gods which
the Romano-British could just as easily be happy to worship, as they could the Gods of Rome.
There are over 1,400 entries in this book, some purely giving a name to a particular deity
and other lengthier entries which deal with the cult of Mithras and older Druidic deities
worshiped long before Roman sandals walked this island, bringing their superstitions and
emperor worship with them.
All of the known deities affiliated with the Roman way of life are here, with a few entries
on Judaeo-Christian related religious issues.
To say that the Romans had a God for everything can be seen on page 211, where we read of
the deity Sterculinus, who presided over the spreading of manure on the fields! The
God of "muck spreading" ideal for farmers.
An excellent resource for students of archaeology and history buffs alike.
With many illustrations and line drawings. A good bibliography for further reading and well
indexed.
First published in 1966.
